Reviewing reputation services by comparing only the overlapping job

Reputation management reviews and comparisons for England buyers, with evidence standards, matching criteria, testing boundaries and clear verdict rules.

What to take away

  • Compare reputation services on the one job they share, such as one reply to one review or one invitation in a stated period, and keep that unit.
  • Label every material claim as documented, observed or unresolved. A missing answer is not a poor score.
  • Ask for quotations in pounds sterling on identical scope, seat count and commitment term, with VAT treatment stated.
  • Treat the price figures below as illustrative UK estimates gathered in 2026, not quotations, and re-verify them before buying.
  • Recheck the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 and CAP Code rule 3.7 before publishing a review claim.

Fix the brief before you speak to suppliers

A review needs a bounded subject. Record the product name, plan, account configuration and the date of the offer you are assessing.

Name the people who collect feedback, approve replies and keep the working records. Those are buyer requirements, not qualities you can infer from a supplier's registered address.

Write must-haves and preferences separately, before any demonstration. If priorities change later, note the reason and reassess every candidate against the revised brief.

For the review process itself, including what supplier documentation can and cannot show, see how we review reputation services, which sets out the limits each verdict must carry.

Example: three services on one shared job

Take one task: publish a reply to a named review using the buyer's own account. Google's own instructions cover replying to individual reviews, editing a business reply and deleting it, which fixes the unit for that candidate.

Trustpilot and Reviews.io mainly invite reviews, which is a different unit. Their invitation price therefore does not answer the same question as a reply workflow.

A free Google Business Profile reply is not a substitute for a paid Trustpilot invitation campaign. Match the unit before you read the price.

Compare overlapping functions, one unit each

Define one unit per criterion and keep it. A reply task counts one reply. An invitation allowance counts invitations over a stated interval. Neither converts into locations, seats or outcomes without further assumptions.

Use three evidence states.

Compare overlapping functions

  • Documenteda cited record describes the capability.
  • Observedthe operator saw it work under recorded conditions.
  • Unresolvedthe available evidence does not settle the question.

For UK advertising, CAP Code rule 3.7 requires documentary substantiation for objective claims, so a superiority headline needs evidence covering its exact scope.

Misleading review practices fall under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, which gives the Competition and Markets Authority new powers on fake reviews.

When a supplier's older help page conflicts with the dated offer, label the feature uncertain and keep both records. Charging labels hide different exposure, so compare fee structures on that basis using comparing reputation charging structures.

Run one controlled exercise

A plan is not a test. Until an authorised operator runs it and records what happened, call the exercise proposed.

  1. Fix the account, the user role and the review used for the test.
  2. Give every candidate the same start time, prompt and requested output.
  3. Save the published result, a screenshot and the timings.
  4. Ask a second person to check the notes against the source records.

Plan a repeatable exercise

  1. Write task protocol before access
  2. Define permissions and observable endpoint
  3. Use authorised test content only
  4. Record who operates each step
  5. Keep failed and incomplete attempts
  6. Retain account configuration and limits

Report the result on the unit you defined. Attributing any change to the service needs its own comparison, explained in attribution for reputation work, which holds one outcome unit across candidates.

Normalise quotes without inventing prices

Request written quotations on the same branch count, activity level and term. Ask for setup charges, recurring fees and separately charged work to be listed. State the VAT treatment.

Use pounds sterling over a common period and show the effect of different commitments. A monthly cancellable offer and a fixed term expose the buyer to different obligations, even when annualised totals match.

Where a charge is absent, leave it unresolved and ask for a completed quote. If currency conversion is needed, record the rate source and date. Value for money needs the buyer's own evidence of usable benefit, which a cost table cannot supply.

Common questions

Is a free Google Business Profile reply enough?

It answers one shared job, replying to a review. It does not cover invitation volume or analytics, so compare it only against candidates doing the same task.

Should I score a service when evidence is missing?

No. Leave the cell unresolved and pause if the gap concerns a must-have. A middle score implies knowledge you do not have.

What should a written quote include before I compare?

Branch count, user seats, included activity, setup fees and exit terms, with VAT treatment stated. Ask for anything missing rather than estimating it.
